When We Was Rad:
Skateboard History from UK Vintage Magazine

Cover of R.a.D Magazine November 1989

Cover of R.a.D skateboard magazine, November 1989
Arron Bleasdale featured on the cover of this issue, skating the pool at Rom.
Cover lines were:

  • Eco Thrash
    Skating Goes Green
  • Dundee
    Hardcore and Hooligans
  • Attitude Adjustment

Cover price was £1.00 and for that you also got a free Santa Cruz sticker. We loved the free stickers, but the distributors always wanted us to find some other promo item. The stickers just didn’t deliver as far as the newsagents were concerned. Probably because a lot of them were nicked. These days there are books about skate stickers of course.

  1. I still have the cover of this magazine. Arron sent it to me decades ago when I was a surfer living in Cali and he was a skater making his way in London. I dug out all the clippings, covers and articles he’d sent me over the years and gave them to him as an engagement present. Rollin’ Through the Decades is by far my favorite film. I grew up in the CA skate scene but seeing that movie made Arron’s life (and all those amazing folks he knew and was friends with) so much more real. It was great to see this up on the Web. Arron’s a married guy now and a Cali transplant working as a kick ass graphic designer in SF and snowboarding as often as time allows. Thanks so much for the site. It’s so important to be able to “return to your roots” and share it with those that know you.

  2. Isn’t that film wonderful? I’m amazed by how well it captured the feel of that period and can imagine how it makes it all seem very real to someone who was only involved at a distance.
I’m glad that Winstan didn’t compromise too much to make it commercially more acceptable. If he’d cut it more he would have left enough time and space for that feeling to come across. It would have ended up like some tv documentary on skateboarding.
Say Hi to Arron for me. Looking closer at the picture he looks a bit nervous about the skater in the bottom of the pool. The uK pools from the seventies were always a bit cramped…
