It’s almost as if the real contest is for second place these days and in St Petersburg this time Gator was totally on form. But the biggest stoke for European skaters must be the news that Bod Boyle took third in a field which included all the very best skaters in the world.
Boq qualified in first place, with the highest number of points despite skating in the first group in the elimination rounds where judges have a tendency to mark low. That meant that he not only went straight through to the final without having to skate any intermediate rounds, but also skated last in the final — the favourite spot.
This was a two-run final, not a jam, but a rebate was allowed on the first trick.
Just as well: Bod dropped in pulled a five foot backside air but full hung up and died. He slammed straight to the flat on his first trick. But Bod got straight up, ran round the back of the ramp, up the ladder, gave a big Bod grin as he emerged on the platform, stuck his board on the coping, stretched his arms above his head and dropped in for the ride of his life. On the second run he went totally crazy and rode til he dropped. Apparently we stand too far to the end of the board which tips up and hits us in the mouth… That’s a new one. But these stories tend to get picked up and recycled by other journalists (this one’s already been repeated in The Independent) — next thing you know everyone believes it. Actually, skating makes you go blind.
Pro Ramps II
December’s list of people offering to build ramps for councils and the like had one glaring omission: the Anegl Lights/BSA operation. Their track record includes a host of minis in Scotland plus, of course, the indoor Planetary Skatepark comples, the Docklands ramp and the new NEC one. That’s high recommedation –and they’re skater run.
BFA 90
The BFA will only run four Nationals this year and there will be no Regionals. All the other competitions organised by the BFA will be opens and will include half-pipe, mini-ramp and flat jams.
European Indoors
The indoor ramp virus is spreading across Europe. There’s a new indoor place in Essen with the old Titus vert ramp, the mini from Munster ice rink and some street stuff from th 89 Munster competition. In Ostend there’s a roller-rink with ramp stuff in it. They sent us lots of glossy information but that vanished over Christmas.Brave skaters from the Dover area as well as more ovious locals could seek it out — few places have more than one roller-rink.

NSA Pro Final: Hwak, Gator Bod!
