Surrey Skateboards were a hugely important part of skateboarding right through the dark ages and on through this period. Their low prices and independant approach caused frequent friction with other shops; they were unique.
In contrast, the modular trick ramp is a prime example of the kind of stuff which was churned out without much thought to the actual needs of actual users.

Surreyskates was hanging on in there til very recently , but I hear it’s no longer…RIP. I made the odd pilgrimage down there a couple of years ago to see a decent selection of all types of bits. What a nice man that dude is (Gavin or Gareth?), sorry to hear he’s had enough.
It was Gavin Clarke who eventually continued to run the business after the shop in Chertsey Street, Woking finally closed down. It truly was the end of an era. Surrey’s had been there since 1977, through the highs and the lows, right from the beginning but not till the very end.
I worked there from 1989-2003. It was my first job after finishing my GCSE’s 2 weeks previously. Happy days!!!
